Russian culture during the time of Peter the Great

During different historical periods, Russian culture developed in various ways. The 18-th century was marked by the development of different fields of Russian culture. Until the end of the 17-th century Russian culture and art was greatly influenced by Russian  Church and religion. However, everything changed during the reign of Russian tsar Peter the Great. At that time, European artists and scholars were invited to Russia not only to work but also to train Russians.

All this efforts resulted in rapid development of Russian culture and art. The first half of the 18-th century became the period of birth of the portrait painting in Russia. Nowadays we can see the portraits of many prominent persons of that time, which are preserved in the State Hermitage museum.

The period of Peter the Great is one of the most important periods not only in the history of the country but also in the development of Russian culture and art. Russian tsar Peter the Great learned many crafts, such as wood and ivory turning. Some of his works can be seen in the Hermitage.

This period was also marked by the development of Russian architecture. One of the most prominent architects of the time of Peter the Great was Bartolomeo Rastrelli, the creator of the Winter palace. The Winter Palace became the residence of Russian tsars. Nowadays it is a part of the Hermitage, where tourists can find many things belonging to Peter the Great.
